Deidra Jackson scored a game-high 19 points as the Jaguars defeated Texas Southern at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge.
Southern went into halftime with a 23-15 lead. The Jaguars dominated the first half, holding the Lady Tigers to just four field goals. Texas Southern shot only 21.1 percent from the field (4-of-19) while SU shot 9-of-29 for 31 percent.
Texas Southern picked up the pace in the second half, as they cut the Jaguar lead to 32-26 on a three-pointer by Jessica Hornage. After a lay-up by Ashlee Norwood, Texas Southern was down 32-30 with 7:25 left in the game. The Jaguars were able to stop the Lady Tigers’ charge, however, and hang on for the win.
Southern University was able to capitalize on the Lady Tigers’ mistakes as they scored 14 points off of turnovers. Texas Southern got a boost from it bench, outscoring the Jags 25-7 on bench points.
Jackson was the only Jaguars to score in double digits. Freda Allen scored eight points and had six rebounds.
Hornage led Texas Southern with 10 points.
