Earlier this month, senior marketing major from Thibodaux and former business editor for the Southern DIGEST Shayla Price, was named the new national spokesperson for Progressive U.
According to its website, progressiveu.org is “a nonprofit social welfare organization” that allows students to blog about their experiences as students.”
“Art Morgan-president of Progressive U-wanted an outlet for students in the media, since they did not have a voice in the print and radio,” said Price. “This site gives students the opportunity to express themselves…they write about the presidential election, abortion, race, the environment and many other things.”
Price stumbled upon the website in 2006 while looking for more openings for scholarships. Once she visited the site and was interested in what it stood for, its advocacy for high school and college students, she started as a volunteer and worked her way up to a paid position in marketing.
The 22-year-old attributes her good fortune to Southern University’s excellent marketing program.
“It allowed me to work at Progressive U as a marketing director because I learned to market certain products to a specific audience. The program also taught me how to work with new media like the Internet.”
With more than 40,000 registered students on the site, Progressive U is a political social network akin to MySpace and Facebook.
For students interested in joining the Progressive U blogosphere, Price suggests, “join quickly and create thought provoking blogs. Points [what students need to win the scholarship] are based on readership and frequency of posts. Bring Southern to the table in your writing.”
After graduating, Price plans to enter law school or work for a public relations firm.
Before signing on with Progressive U, Price published a book about her scholarship search entitled, “The Scholarship Search: A Guide to Winning Free Money for College,” whiles deals with topics such as writing a résumé, selecting a college and asking for recommendation letters.
