SU men (11-19, 9-9 Southwestern Athletic Conference) were defeated in the first round of the SWAC Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., by Jackson State, 56-55, for the second consecutive year.
Junior point guard Chris Davis was third in the conference in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game despite changes in the lineup, which featured him coming off the bench and then starting later in the season. Davis also shot 53 percent from the field, good for second in the SWAC, although he missed the entire month of December due to personal issues.
The Ladies (12-16, 10-8) lost in the first round as well, falling victim to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 64-55. Freshman forward Freda Allen led the SWAC in rebounds, averaging 10.1 per game, and was also third in the conference in steals, with 2.6 per game.
