It was a scarce turnout in the Lakefront room of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union as two students showed up for Mid-Day Movies Monday.
The lack of attendance at the first showing of the movie Pride, could have been due to lack of advertising.
The fact is that a lot of students were just unaware of Mid-Day movies.
“I didn’t know anything about Mid-Day movies, I just saw the movie on and I sat down to watch it,” said Carl Stewart, a student in attendance.
This is not the unions first time during Mid-Day movies and has shown
“We didn’t expect a big turn out because at 12 o’clock, students are coming in and out of the union for lunch,” said Gale Toussant, Director in the student union.
Over the next three months, the student union will be screening movies such as Pride, The Blindside, Remember The Titans, Columbiana, Radio, Coach Carter, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
With the arrival of black history month, It would seem that the student union, looks screen movies in sight of black history month.
“We’re showing movies that students can both enjoy and learn from,” said Carleen Jones, Reservations and Scheduling Manager in the union.
Movies like Pride, The Blindside, Remember The Titans, and Coach Carter, depict the struggles of African Americans in sports at a time when whites dominated.
These films are both entertaining and thought provoking explorations of the black experience throughout history.
The joys, fears, challenges and strength that the characters in these movies show, are no different from the ones Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and many others experienced.
The next showing will be The Blindside, on February 15.
“We figure we will do more advertising like flyers for the upcoming dates,” said Jones.
These screenings started February 1stand will continue on select dates until April 25th.
“The attendance usually goes up around the third or fourth movie,” said Toussant.
