Southern University Baton Rouge campus experienced a mid-year cut in December of last year that totaled to nearly $1.7 million.
With roughly $1.7 million being cut from the budget that meant that the university had to reduce expenditures by the cut amount.
According to Flandus McClinton Jr., vice chancellor for finance and administration, for the past two years the university has been faced with mid-year cuts.
With the cuts being made and implemented, the university made cuts to personnel, travel, supplies and operating services.
According to one student, N’Kyia Moten freshmen criminal justice and psychology double major from Washington, La., the mid-year cuts did not only effect to the personnel, travel, supplies and operating services but mostly the students.
Moten said that the school could not handle this cut. With the way classes are set up, it is postponing graduation for some students.
“Because the whole morality of the school was brought down when the school went to a four day week,” said Moten.
McClinton said that mid-year cuts occur during November and December.
The university is cut a certain amount based on the system.
The state determines, depending on the revenue, how much a mid-year cut is then the Board of Regents allocates the amount.
McClinton said depending on state appropriations a system received, the more they could get cut.
Since Southern is a much smaller school, it receives less state appropriations than LSU.
State appropriations are the amounts that the state provides for finance for students. In other words state appropriations are state dollars said McClinton.
McClinton said that the budget is set student fees.
According to Chancellor Llorens the vacant positions on campus were considered budget savers due to the fact that they were not filled and that would allow more money to stay within the budget.
“That is how a lot of that was taken care of,” said Llorens.
According to McClinton when the university’s budget was cut in December it went down to $67 million.
McClinton stated that the way the university addressed the mid-year cut was through layoffs, travel expenses and other expenses related to those.
