This past weekend at Rice-Totten Stadium, ESPN highlighted some Jaguar talent not once but twice and even tweeted this young student athlete as being scouted for future Sunday game day.
The tweet was sent by @espn and said, “Meanwhile in college football, Southern’s Willie Quinn had a punt-return TD that would fit right in on a Sunday.”
140 characters can speak such volumes.
No one could have ever thought that a swift 5’5 kid from Miami, Florida would make such a difference to the Jaguar squad.
This kid’s name is Willie Quinn and with a smiling face, he’s happy to do what he loves.
Southern’s senior receiver racked up 276 total yards and three touchdowns however, none as a receiver, to spark the Jaguars’ 50-13 slaughter of Mississippi Valley State on Thursday night at Rice-Totten Stadium.
Quinn found the end zone on a punt return, threw for another touchdown on a trick play and brought a kickoff back for a score during the teams’ conference opener. He averaged 46 yards per touch.
“Willie is one of the most humble guys on our team,” said Southern Head Coach Dawson Odums. “God gives us all talents, and he uses his to his fullest.”
This talent helped the Jags scrape pass in last weekend’s bout against LA Tech and the team was reminded 0-0 during this bout.
The Jaguars opened the game with a 13-point lead before his first highlight was attributed on social media networks and on ESPN top ten.
After the Jaguars forced the Delta Devils for the three and out, the young and comfortable senior bolted down the field from the 39-yard line and broke virtuous tackles on his way into the red zone. He “flipped” over a Delta Devil defender into the end zone, which increased the lead 20-0 in the first quarter.
This factor came after he was awarded SWAC Specialist of the Week for the 100-yard kickoff return against Louisiana Tech the previous week.
During postgame interviews, Odums caught a twinkle in his eye in which he saw Quinn’s highlight on the big-screen.
“Hey, look at that, Willie,” Odums told the senior receiver. “They got you on TV, man. You see that? That’s pretty impressive. You made ‘Sports Center.’ ”
“Top 10,” Quinn said, smiling.
Before the half was up, Quinn bolted again.
On the first play of the Jaguars’ drive after the recovery by Nicholas McDonald’s interception, he took a drive toward the left sideline and found junior receiver Randall Menard wide open downfield for an 89-yard scoring strike. The touchdown put Southern ahead 33-0 with 6:20 remaining in the second quarter.
The Delta Devils saw no relief until the near end of the first half when they tacked on six points to the scoreboard.
Valley chipped away at the deficit with another touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, which concluded their scoring game.
Quinn put their comeback to rest with a 90-yard touchdown on next return.
The Delta Devils looked like they had him stopped around the 30-yard line by fingertip grip, but he found a lane and outran the opposition into the end zone once again.
He now has seven career return touchdowns, with four coming on kickoffs and three on punts.
“We don’t need much. Just give him a little crease, and he’ll make a big hole,” said Odums. “He’s an electrifying football player. We’re glad he’s on our team. He’s a special talent, and we’re just glad he plays for the Jaguars.”
Even teammate Lenard Tillery had some supporting words to say for Quinn’s overall performance.
“This kid is amazing and whenever he touches the ball, he can score. Every team that we faced saw that you can’t game plan against a guy like this. He makes you take your game to a higher level when he plays how he plays.”
Southern will be back at A.W. Mumford on Saturday, September 19 when they charge up against Jackson State for the first home game of the season.
