The Lady Jaguars dominated their first home game against Spring Hill College 65-46 on Friday November 13 in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Even though Friday the 13 is known as the day of bad luck Southern won by 19 points.
Southern showed their home crowd what could be expected of the season in their pursuit of a championship that evaded them last season.
With senior guard Britney Washington out with an injury presented an open opportunity for freshman Skylar O’Leary to step up to the plate. She started as point guard and took on the task with ease. Playing a total of 28 minutes, she managed to go 3-4 from the free throw line, grab two steals and ended the game with 12 points. Juniors Courtnei Purnell and Miaya Crowder also ended the night with 12 points.
Southern had 23 points coming off the bench which just added fuel to the fire in their efforts to win.
Spring Hill matched the Jaguar’s intensity for as long as they could before Southern managed to break away with a big lead. Southern dominated the paint and scored most of their points off of fast breaks. Coach Sandy Pugh cleared the bench before the fourth quarter started, allowing everyone playing time. Southern led 25-12 at halftime and went 12-34 from the field which outshined Spring Hill 4-26.
Spring Hills starting point guard, Jennifer Clark, went 2-3 from the 3 point line and finished the game with her team’s high of 9 points and Augustine Clark went 3-12 from the field and finished with 8 points.
Even with the score as dilapidated as it was Spring Hill out rebounded Southern 44-46
On Sunday afternoon on the SEC Network against Texas A&M University, Southern struggled against the SEC team for the duration of the game and fell 47-88.
5’11 sophomore forward, Briana Green led southern defensively with 8 rebounds, while also dishing out four assists.
Cortnei Purnell was the leading scorer of the game with a total of 16 points during her 31 minutes of play.
Texas A&M crushed Southern scoring 34 points in the paint while Lady Jags only scored 7. Freshman guard Skylar O’bear had another great game with 20 points and only two turnovers. Speaking of turn overs, the Lady aggies of Texas A&M capitalized and scored 31 points off of the Jags’ turnovers.
Texas A&M out rebounded Southern 47-40 and capitalized on the 32 defensive rebounds to accost for the heavy lead.
Southern was crushed during the half and went for a 15 point deficit (49-34) after a swift layup by Crowder. Then the Lady Jags picked up six points in the third period while Texas led with 66 points.
Southern (1-1) sets their eyes on the next game which will take place on Friday, November 20 against South Alabama in the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in their pursuit of a championship.
