Sunday night was a joyful one for the faculty and student body of Southern University. Gospel Night on the Bluff was held in the Cotillion Ballroom of the student union, presented by the Department of Residence Life and Housing as part of “Res-Life Week”.
“This was a wonderful way to jump-start the week,” said Sophia Martin, a junior Education major.
Wanda August, an SU alumni and proud breast cancer survivor, hosted the event. August received her bachelors in Radio and TV Broadcasting in 1987 and a Masters in Mass Media in 1988. She is also a member of the Bayou Lafourche Are Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
“Southern University is the place to be,” said August.
There were many choirs in attendance, including those of Emanuel Baptist Church, the University of Louisiana Lafayette Gospel Choir, and New Revelation Choir.
“The choir from New Revelation did an awesome job,” said Gianda Williams, a freshman Art major.
Benjamin Key, a junior Mechanical Engineering major and member of the Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity, was overjoyed by his experience.
“It was an amazing event,” said Key. “It was great to see students, faculty and staff at a gospel event. It’s not every day I get to see such togetherness as I have seen here tonight. I am more than happy to be here, a part of this event tonight,” Key finished.
Gospel Night on the Bluff was a wonderful kick start to “Res-Life Week”. Following events include the Ms. Res-Life Pageant and Foam Party.
