Before you think I’m dragging SUBR’s go-to hotspot for My Pleasure eatery, Chick-fil-A, I promise you – I’m not. You must know that the popular fast-food chain has been a hit since its grand opening in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union on Wednesday, August 23, 2017.
My class could be in 10 minutes, and I will still wait for my Chicken Sandwich, Waffle Fries, and Large Hi-C! As a freshman on the Bluff back in 2018, I had just enough time because the all-star staff did not come to play!
Six years later, Chick-fil-A on the bluff is still hanging on strong but, the lines seem to be extremely lengthy and are not moving as fast as semesters prior.
As a student leader, I’ve had the pleasure to experience the fast-food in line, at the counter, and with various staff. The customer service from some workers could use more hospitality when speaking to students.
You know, smiling when being approached, reassuring the customer, and most importantly – representing the company with a notable “My pleasure!”
Since school has begun for the Fall 2023 term, I’ve averaged about 18 minutes waiting in line and 3-5 minutes receiving food.
Students on platforms such as X, formerly known as Twitter, & college communication thread app “SideChat.” The post includes a discussion on possible staff shortages and wait times.
During the day, operations for the Aramark location have a very high-volume traffic, not to mention the students enjoying the extensive closing time being 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Freshman Business Management Major Adasyn Joseph expressed, “The line moves efficiently. The longest I’ve waited was 15 minutes.”
After observation and research, I’ve learned that the Aramark franchise hires SU students as well as direct-hire employees to service the company.
So, just take a moment to imagine being a student at the university while going to work right afterward! Pretty hectic! Don’t you think? That seems to be the reality for many staff.
I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with the Night Manager, Patrick Lafleur, who holds down the crew. Students can’t get enough of him and can’t help but love his service!
He ensures that each member of staff and student gets their orders right the first time rather than incorrectly – which could result in an even longer wait time!
So, the next time you’re waiting in line, having your order together beforehand or even applying to the restaurant could mean a pleasure of opportunity!
