Homecoming is a time for students to let loose and enjoy the fruits of their labor from the first half of the fall semester. Simultaneously, homecoming week can be extremely overwhelming with days of packed events whether you are a part of planning and executing events, attending them, or both. Since it is a hard time to keep up with assignments, students often use the week before to get ahead so that the fast-paced week, full of homecoming festivities will not leave them behind in the aftermath. This semester, the transition won’t be so seamless for most, because midterm week is directly following busiest week of the school year.
With midterms being the week after homecoming, it is hard to let your guard down and enjoy yourself because you have to prepare for a full week of exams. Preparation includes not only studying, but also trying to meet with preoccupied professors to settle any grievances before midterm grades are released. One could argue that we are students and have to continue to be responsible with our schoolwork no matter what may be going on around us, but students prove day after day that they can persevere through mental issues, housing instability, money problems and so much more. Homecoming season should not be a test of a student’s determination, but a genuine time to soak in the love and joy from alumni and fellow classmates.
The university should be more mindful when curating the academic calendar and ensure that the dates they are setting are in the best interest of the students. This is an example of why students should be a part of making decisions because we are currently in the (trenches) day by day striving for our degree, and our insight could assist faculty on what would benefit ourselves and our colleagues.
