As midterms hit college campuses with high intensity, students at Southern University A&M find solace in an event that provides a welcome respite from the relentless grind of exams. The enthusiastic Sophomore Class Cabinet and the Jaguar ActivitIes Board host the “Crafting & Conversations” event allowing students to take a break from their books and enjoy a beer creative and relaxing evening of crafting and camaraderie.
Last week, the university’s homecoming festivities electrified the campus with sports, concerts, parties, parades, and brunches. However, this following week brings the looming specter of midterms. Faced with the pressures of exams and assignments, students yearned for a breather, and the Sophomore Class Cabinet was quick to respond to this need.
The event takes place in the Cotillion Ballroom, which is transformed into a haven of artistic expression. The room fills with a delightful assortment of crafting materials, from canvases and paints for aspiring artists to candle-making supplies for those who prefer a fragrant creative outlet. The soft glow of the lights and the hum of background music create a serene ambiance that makes the crafting experience even more enjoyable.
Reagan Carmichael, a sophomore child development major from Lake Charles, expressed her gratitude for the event. “Crafting & Conversations is beneficial to the student body because it gives us a chance to do something relaxing and listen to music. It also gives us a chance to socialize with our peers.” Throughout the evening, students engage in lively conversations, forging new friendships and strengthening existing ones. The crafting tables are not just spaced for artistic expression, but also hubs of social interaction. Some students work in pairs, sharing ideas and inspiration, while others embark on solitary creative journeys. The soothing backdrop of music fills the air, enhancing the sense of community.
Sophomore Class President, Adekunle Ajayi, was elated by the event’s success. “We wanted to have something to destress students. I hope this event makes students more comfortable talking about their mental health and we also want to promote the Counseling Center to help students as it is free. Don’t be afraid to speak up, this is a safe space.”
