Heading into week five, the Southwestern Athletic Conference, known as the (SWAC), has not received exciting potential so far. The teams that were considered favorites coming out of preseason polls are not living up to too much of the hype as they once were when Deion Sanders was at Jackson State, Fred Mcnair was dominating with Alcorn State, and with coach Dooley running his era of the Jaguars. The two teams that are sitting at the top of the SWAC in each conference right now are FAMU (Florida A&M), who sit at 3-1 overall with a 2-0 conference record, and PVAMU (Prairie View A&M), who are 2-2 with a 2-0 conference play. While on the other hand, other teams such as Southern, Grambling, Alabama A&M, and Alcorn State struggle to get on the right track of winning. As for Southern University, the team is looking forward to making a run in the SWAC after finally getting its first conference win against Alabama A&M. Now, after a win against the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, who are at the lowest right now in the standings with a 1-4 record heading into mid session and with Grambling beating Prairie View A&M, both teams tied for first place in the SWAC West. As a result, the Bayou Classic in November looks like a determining factor thus far. With the SWAC looking complicated, who will take the chance to claim the throne this season now that Coach Prime, aka Deion Sanders, has left his Jackson State reign after last season? Now, Southern looks to have great potential to compete for another SWAC Championship soon in December. However, they must clean up their mistakes and set the tone to become the team fans and the SU alumni can watch. There is a schedule that Southern has been given for the team to make a solid run through the SWAC by seeing most of the opponents play ahead of conference games. This will allow the player to have enough time studying each team. However, the SWAC can never be avoided by a school like Alcorn State or Texas Southern, which are led by a talented quarterback Andrew Body. Could this be another year for Southern University to escape through again? Or will one of the lower-seed teams sneak up in the standings to win it? With 8 games left in the season, only time will tell who will get the right to be called the 2023 SWAC champions.
