In a dazzling celebration of grace, poise, and academic excellence, the 93rd Miss Southern University took center stage on her coronation day, marking a momentous occasion that radiated with regal splendor and the promise of inspiring leadership. The theme of the night is “The Big Wave.” Southern University succeeded in setting the mood to set sail into a night of wonder. The voyage begins with the families, guests, and student body entering the F.G Clark Activity Center. The sounds of waves and soft ambiance sounds of SWV – Rain echo through the Mini-Dome.
Dr. Katara Williams and Dr. Donovan Segura, distinguished emcees, voiced the evening. Beginning with the opening performance of our 2023-2024 Gold ‘N’ Blues Dance Team, the ladies graced the floor with a dance by Kanye West, Water.
As the evening unfolded, the spotlight was unveiled as special guests were welcomed from former Miss Southern, Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR) Campus Cohorts, and both Southern University System (SUS) Royal Courts of Southern University Shreveport Louisiana (SUSLA) & Southern University New Orleans (SUNO).
“Two hours before your event, I spent time with your mother dolling her up and trading stories about the girl who’d be crowned Queen, you…” expressed Senior Criminal Justice major Krysten Goodman.
The Queen doesn’t arrive until her Royal Court makes their grand appearance. Jordan’s Royal Court of Southern University’s style was dripped in Sky Blue and Black.
Before Jordan made her grand entrance, the audience was intrigued to receive another performance by our Southern University Gold ‘N’ Blues with an angelic ballad from “Never Enough” by Loren Allred.
Cheers of joy as Miss Southern is heard from the crowd as Senior Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Studies major Tramia Rogers shared, “From the moment you asked me to be on your campaign team, I knew it was you, Jordan. Mississippi girls will forever do it the best. Tonight, you showed up and showed out as always. My Queen, but forever my sister. I love you, JZA!”
Jordan made her stage appearance with Little Miss Southern, Erin L. Johnson, and her Royal Escort, Ethan F. Hill, standing beside her.
Miss 93rd walked out wearing her self-named “Brenae” Dress by Samantha Woo in white-tafetta material—the dress shares Jordan’s namesake of her middle name.
In tradition, Miss Southern is crowned with the help of a former Miss Southern and president of Southern University System, Dennis Shields. In contrast, on the beautiful occasion, the Inaugural Director of Inclusion and Community Outreach and 88th Miss Southern, Darby Smith, did the honors by pinning her crown.
Therapeutic Recreation major Stephen Sims, better known as Miss Southern’s right hand, expressed, “Ever since the day we met and became friends, I knew you were bound for greatness; you always carry yourself with grace and excellence no matter the occasion. Love you, Jordan, this is your reign – live it to the fullest!”
Miss Southern was presented with her Scepter of Power by Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Fredrick Carl Walton.
With its jewels and ornamentation, a scepter is a symbol of power. The ceremonial staff is used to signify royalty, and Jordan’s custom fleur-de-lis scepter made its grand appearance during the ceremony.
Shortly after, Jordan receives her Royal Bouquet as everyone stands to watch her bestow her scepter as she has been crowned and acknowledged as the unwavering Miss 93rd Southern University and A&M College.
The audience rose to their feet as emcee Dr. Katara Williams shared Jordan’s promenade with the audience. As Good Days by SZA plays during Miss Southern’s first walk with her crown, scepter, and royal bouquet.
Brandon Horne, the 79th SGA President, and Royal Escort to Miss Southern, aided Jordan throughout the evening and led Miss Southern in her royal waltz, followed by the Royal Court and campus cohorts. The royal waltz was performed to Jhene Aiko’s – Blue Dream.
From being her daddy’s little princess to now a Queen to her student body, Jordan shared her special dance with her father, Dr. Bryman Williams, to “My Girl” by the Temptations.
Upon congratulating and briefly interviewing Miss Southern, she was asked, “Being that you’ll forever be noticed as someone’s Miss Southern, how does it feel to now hold the capacity of that title post-coronation?”
“Honestly, it’s surreal! —-I just want to continue being that role model for any and everyone. I’m forever thankful as more is to come!”
