The end of October marks the
closing of Domestic Violence
Awareness Month.
The movement’s origin began in
October of 1981, and was created
by the National Coalition Against
Domestic Violence (NCADV).
The month is filled with purple,
a color that symbolizes survival
and strength.
With intentions of uplifting
victims of domestic abuse and
helping shed light on the usually
silent killer, I want you to know
that although October is nearing
its end – victims of domestic
violence still deserve to be heard.
I would like to further bring
awareness to this month by
informing those of you reading
that domestic violence is not only
physical but can also be comprised
of psychological and mental abuse.
I believe that it is important that
we study the environment around
us because domestic violence is not
always obvious.
Noticing the behavior of those
around you can help you effectively
aid in helping victims who may feel
unsure about reaching out.
Letting those around you who
are going through this situation
know that they are not to blame
for others’ actions is the first
step in helping them verbalize
their circumstance to the proper
authorities.
The blaming of victims for these
instances must stop to bring justice
for domestic violence cases that
span across not only the United
States but the world as a majority.
The longer domestic abuse takes
place, the more likely it is to end in
tragedy.
Society must understand that
anyone can be a victim (no matter
gender, sexuality…etc.) and a little
bit of sympathy goes a long way.
The less time others take
shaming those who are victims
of domestic violence we could
use those opportunities to better
strengthen resources such as
therapy and temporary housing.
If you are anyone you know is a
victim of domestic violence, please
reach out to those around you or
proper authorities.
If no one has told you today, you
are valued here; you are worthy of
the respect and patience it takes to
build a strong relationship.
At any given moment, the
Domestic Violence Hotline (800-
799-7233) is available 24/7 and they
are ready to listen.
