In a gridiron battle that unfolded like a cinematic masterpiece, Southern University’s football team secured a breathtaking victory over Texas Southern University on Saturday. The game started slow, with both teams engaged in a defensive chess match, but it was the indomitable defense of Southern that stole the spotlight, holding the line from the first whistle to the final, dramatic moments.
The Southern Jaguars’ defense, led by standout Defensive End Ckelby Givens and Defensive Back Jordan Carter, showcased a resilience that set the tone for the entire game. As the Texas Southern offense sought to find openings, Southern’s defense stood firm, turning every inch of the field into a hard-fought battleground. Givens and Carter, forces to be reckoned with, made their presence felt throughout the match, disrupting plays and applying relentless pressure on the Texas Southern quarterback.
The game’s slow start began gaining momentum as both teams adjusted their strategies defensively. Southern’s defense, however, remained the linchpin, preventing Texas Southern from gaining significant ground. Texas Southern remained in the lead for three quarters, as the score was 17-7 by the end of the third quarter. The turning point came when Givens executed a game-changing scoop and score, showcasing his brilliance and igniting a spark in the entire Southern University team. The touchdown was his first college career touchdown. “The coaches just tell you to keep playing. I was just thinking to myself, I have to keep playing. You can’t give up, so that’s what we did; we kept on playing.” Givens expressed when asked how he could execute that crucial touchdown play.
The real magic unfolded in the fourth quarter. Trailing by a field goal, Southern’s defense, once again, rose to the occasion. With eight seconds left on the clock, the improbable happened – Kicker Joshua Griffin, not a stranger to high-pressure situations, launched a jaw-dropping 54-yard field goal, tying the game at 17-17 and sending the stadium into a frenzy. Griffin says, “In that situation is a situation every kicker prays for. I pray for a game where I can put my team on my back and perform to the best of my abilities. That’s all there is to it.” The 54-yard field goal is a personal best for the young kicker.
Overtime loomed, and the Southern University defense, perhaps the unsung heroes of the day, refused to yield. Texas Southern had the first possession in overtime, but Southern’s defense demonstrated an ironclad resolve, preventing any scoring opportunities. The stage was set for Southern’s offense to take the field with a chance to seal the victory with a second touchdown from Kendrick Rhymes, the only one to score the game outside of Givens.
In a moment of poetic justice, Southern’s offense finally delivered, scoring the decisive touchdown that reverberated through the stadium, clinching the hard-fought win. The Southern University Jaguars emerged as the victors in a game that showcased, more significantly, the unwavering strength and tenacity of their defense.
Head Coach Eric Dooley shed some light on his offensive strategies not being effective all game, stating, “Well, you know the thing about when you look at the whole picture its called team. You know, sometimes some teams’ offense, special teams, or defense are probably gonna do well and not gonna do so well. The thing is, you just have to hold it together and play for one another. I thought they showed the true definition of what sixty minutes of football has been.” Southern’s offense struggled considerably throughout the duration of the game. Starting quarterback Harold Blood threw for 8 for 26 with a total of 58 yards and one interception. It wasn’t the best game for the veteran quarterback but he’s looking forward to the match-up between Southern and Alcorn.
Southern University’s triumph over Texas Southern will undoubtedly be remembered as a testament to the power of a steadfast defense and the thrilling unpredictability that makes college football a sport like no other.
