The Beta Sigma Ques make their comeback after a 5-year hiatus. With their new presentation being held in spring 2023, it was only right for them to make their appearance well-known around campus. With their Founder’s Day falling on November 17, 1911, they decided to host their week on November 13–17, 2023.
The week presented to the student body was “Achievement Week” They presented 7 events. Some of the events were Miles for Smiles, Miss Omega Psi Phi Pageant, Manhood Monday, and Don’t Skate By. These events aimed to showcase the fraternity’s commitment to service, scholarship, and brotherhood. Miles for Smiles encouraged participants to run or walk for a charitable cause, while the Miss Omega Psi Phi Pageant celebrated the beauty and intelligence of women within the campus community. Manhood Monday provided an opportunity for members to engage in discussions about personal growth and responsibility, while Don’t Skate By promoting professional development.
Asher Spivey, a graduating senior and a member of the fraternity, expressed “The point of the week is because we are returning to the yard and wanted to get creative. After discussing with my line brothers and coming up with a final solution on how we wanted to bring back Omega week we decided to go all out.”
One of the events that stood out the most was the Miss Omega Pageant. “Welcome to Quescade.” The pageant had a Roll Bounce theme, bringing back the 70’s and 80’s appreciation. The Omegas hadn’t hosted a pageant since 2019 so it was essential for them to come with heat. Asher also stated “I would say that my favorite event was the pageant. Getting to know all the contestants and having help from Arielle Brooks & Kamryn Eugene creating the choreography and logistics was a different experience. It was a great way to bring in the newest Miss Omega Camille Smith.”
As well as speaking with Miss Areona Mitchel, a junior nursing major stated that “ the pageant was very authentic. everyone can be themselves.” She also mentioned that the pageant showcased the diverse talents and personalities of the contestants, making it a truly inclusive and empowering experience for everyone involved. Additionally, Miss Mitchel emphasized that the support and collaboration between Arielle Brooks, Kamryn Eugene, and the contestants played a crucial role in making the pageant a success.
Another event that stood out during their week was Manhood Monday. This is because, in this generation, discussions about masculinity and what it means to be a man are often overlooked or misunderstood. Manhood Monday provided a safe space for open dialogue and allowed participants to explore and challenge societal norms surrounding masculinity. It was refreshing to see young men engaging in these conversations and supporting each other’s personal growth.
The Beta Sigma Ques recently announced that they would be having a new member presentation on Monday, November 20, 2023, following their week.
Asher finally stated “It feels great to be back. We are here to do the work that the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. have worked hard to pave the way for.”
