The inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament tipped last Friday November 3rd, and it has begun to have several buzz around the world with fans and speculators in uproar and confusion. The NBA and its commissioner Adam Silver granted a new In Season Tournament in the offseason to promote the game in a fun way during the season bringing new unique uniforms and questionable court designs. The goal in mind was since it is a long 82 game season, it needed to have an aspect to where it is more competitive and more intriguing during the season. However, the results so far have not panned out that way. Fans and even players are confused on the format and why it is being placed at the top of the season with only 6 or 7 games have been played so far. The rules are that the 30 NBA teams were divided into six groups of five teams. Each team will play the other members of its group once. Then eight teams will advance to a single-elimination tournament. These tournament games happen every Tuesday or Friday until a winner is crowned with an In-Season Trophy and $500,000 in incentives for the winning players and coaches. I think it’s important to see the bigger picture as a fan but sometimes you simply can’t. After years of very little engagement or not as much engagement later in the season or playoffs, the beginning of the season has always run into the NFL regular season and the World Series. So, this is nothing new, why add something that is rather confusing than competitive and as a fan, if it aint broke don’t fix it. Other than daily bettors, fans will not tune into a 10:30 game on a Tuesday night unless it is their team and even if it’s still a stretch. The In-season Tournament is not needed and the purpose of it, is not being replicated to us fans so they need to discard of it .
