Class is in session! The men of Southern University Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated host their 2023-2024 Miss Black & Gold Pageant on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023.
With just two weeks of preparation, all six contestants attended the Miss Black & Gold Informational on October 3rd after being personally selected to represent the chapter for this special occasion.
This pageant is unlike your typical Southern University pageant, where the contestant preps to compete for that special night only. The winner will not only be a spotlight for the campus but also represented at the Miss Black & Gold district convention pageant, competing against other Louisiana chapters such as Grambling, LaTech, LSU, etc.
If qualified, Miss Black & Gold will represent the chapter regionally against other Miss Black & Gold winners from states such as Oklahoma, Louisiana, & Texas.
Miss Black & Gold is expected to empower women while she achieves her personal and professional goals. She must be a role model carrying a very high GPA, someone who’s aware of what’s occurring in the African-American community, as well as a well-spoken individual.
This year’s annual theme for the pageant was Alpha University, where the six established women utilize their talent and intelligence to attain a platform dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others.
The six contestants opened the show with their energetic performance to 90s classics of “Motownphilly” by Boyz II Men & “How Do You Want It” by Tupac.
Contestant Number One is Dalaysia Armani, a 21-year-old senior who plans to attend Southern University Law School upon graduation in the spring of 2024.
Contestant Number two, Kimani Bishop, is also a graduating senior who plans to not only attend nursing school but also become a second lieutenant for the United States Army.
Contestant Number three, Olivia Humphrey, is a 21-year-old senior who dreams of becoming a CBS Morning News anchor and pursuing her doctorate at Louisiana State University.
Contestant Number four, Emmy Mgimwa, is a freshman who has participated in this semester’s Miss Men’s Federation pageant & Homecoming Fall 2023 Fashion Show this year.
Contestant Number five, Mynas Robertson, is a 21-year-old member of the Gold’ N’ Blues Dance Team as she is inspired to dance own her own dance studios as well as dance for an NBA team.
Contestant Number six, Aminata Thiam, is an 18-year-old African student who plans to attend Southern University Law School upon graduation and serve in the Air Force.
The Office of Student Media broadcasted the event as well as other media platforms, capturing all four rounds, including swimsuit, business, talent, and lastly, formal wear.
Senior and Chapter President Christian Cameron was the Alpha coordinating his first-ever pageant, as the attendance was a packed house.
Christian was asked, how does it feel to be operating another pageant finally?
“Since coming back from suspension in 2021, we’ve been doing a lot of things to contribute to the student body and with the intent to inspire the females on campus to participate in this pageant, where she will have access to scholarships and ample opportunities to travel with our chapter.”
As each round occurred throughout the evening, intermissions were longer than expected for your typical pageant students and guests.
First-year students and Animal Science Major Javon Stabes attended the pageant, where he expressed – “It was times where I would notice the DJ play songs longer than usual in between each round. Eventually, it got to the point where everyone was seen getting up before the formal round.”
Judges deliberated during the intermission after the talent, skipping the entire portion of formal questions, and the winners were announced.
Contestant Number One won Miss Congeniality, Contestant Number Two was deemed Runner Up, and your 2023-2024 Miss Black & Gold & Social Media Winner was Contestant Number Five, Miss Mynas Robertson.
“I am truly just grateful. This is my first pageant ever, and to win is a blessing, and to win is a blessing. My prayers have been answered.” Myna Robertson gleaned as she expressed gratitude for winning the 2023-2024 Miss Black and Gold title.
