In what was an eventful weekend at Lee-Hines stadium, the Jags took on their SWAC West rival Alcorn Braves in a bid to solidify their status as a SWAC contender during a .500 start to conference play. Coming into a series-decider game, the Jaguars sought to get payback and a win against a Braves team that proved to be more than a little competitive despite what their record would indicate.
The opening game saw the Jags start slowly out the gate, trailing by as many as three runs before hosting a hits bonanza on the arms of Jaylen Armstrong, who led the Jaguars with four runs on the day. Helping out in the opening nights scoring were juniors Jah’li Hendricks and Khyle Radcliffe, who both scored two runs apiece, with Armstrong closing the game in the 8th inning on a three-run homer.
Facing potentially falling five games below .500 after their initial loss on the first night of the series, the Braves came out early in the game looking to rebound, leading 9-0 at one point in the sixth inning before the Jaguars recorded a run. Despite showing grit in the game’s concluding innings however, the Jags dropped a heartbreaking loss to the conference-worst Braves by a score of 15-12 despite a 7-run 9th inning and two runs each from Khyle Radcliffe and Jonathan Evan.
The concluding game of the weekend was an opportunity for both teams to claim a series victory with each team claiming a single win on each of the following days. Despite Saturday being a high-scoring affair for the Braves, however, they couldn’t seem to replicate that performance against a motivated Jaguar team. The Jags struck first blood in the final game of the weekend, collecting two runs in the bottom of the first inning from Armstrong and Burgos, the latter of which came at the hands of a Radcliffe RBI.
Despite runs being harder to come by for the Jags on the final of the series, it proved infinitely more so for the Braves as the 4th inning saw them record their only run of the game. Featuring runs from Radcliffe and Sanchez in the 7th inning, the Jags crudités to a comfortable victory of 6-1 against their conference foes.
Claiming a 2-1 series victory over the Braves, the Jags improve to 5-4 in conference play. Reclaiming a winning record in the SWAC, the Jags will look to maintain momentum as they prepare for their upcoming five-game road trip before returning to Lee-Hines Field to take on Nicholls on April 12.
