The Southern University women’s bowling team has yet again won the title of SWAC Regular Season Champions. This marks their second consecutive year winning the prestigious honor, solidifying their dominance in the conference. The team’s hard work and dedication have paid off, as they continue to set a high standard for excellence in women’s bowling. Their impressive performance on the lanes is a testament to their exceptional skill and teamwork, making them a force to be reckoned with in the sport. With this victory, they have proven themselves as the team to beat in the SWAC conference. Many wonder how they were able to gain such a great title two years in a row and what they did to prepare themselves mentally and physically to be able to play. However, the question is: what can we learn from the women’s bowling team, and will they continue to uphold the title they’ve had these two years? The Digest got an opportunity to talk to head coach Barry Doyle behind the greatness. A deeper insight into Doyle’coaching, about the team in itself, and what to expect next from the team was provided.
Doyle is going into his fourth year coaching the ladies of the bowling team. His team consists of 6 girls. During this time, he has brought the ladies to be the season champs. When asked about the team repeating as regular season champs, he emphasized the team has put in a lot of hard work.Doyle said , “After winning last year, the goal this year was to repeat and challenge ourselves. We knew teams would put bullseyes on us, but we didn’t care. A lot of hard work and dedication.” Additionally, he elaborated on how the team can become SWAC champions again. “A lot more hard work and a lot more practice, stay focused, and the whole team is returning.” He currently has no seniors, so they have a good core of girls, with 4 juniors and 2 freshmen on the team. Many students were not informed that we had a bowling team and were not informed of the abilities of the bowling team. When asked, “What would you like to tell the student body about the bowling team? Head Coach Doyle commented, “They keep working and have the awareness that the school does indeed have a bowling team. The team has been around since the 1990s. They won two years in a row and were able to make an appearance on ESPN three years ago. It is another one of the great teams on campus, and we would like everyone to know that.”
Lastly, when asked if he had any further comments, he stated that he has gained the title of “Coach of the Year’ for two consecutive years in a row. This year, they have “Freshman of the Year” Jermyah Bolden from Chicago, Illinois. On the first team, they had Junior Jailyn Rodgers and Junior Nyla Wilson. Which is First Team All SWAC. Jermyah Bolden was also on the second team in the SWAC. He also announced that the women’s bowling team is the first seed in the SWAC tournament. He lastly stated that the team is a more on-the-road team, but they are trying to host some games here at Southern University.
