Sports is a business, but entertaining. The NFL season has concluded, meaning that no game will be played until August. Often, sports fanatics consider this the “dead” period of sports. As much of a sports guru as I am, I had to learn there are other sports worth watching that can be entertaining to help with this dead zone.
For starters, basketball season is currently happening on the collegiate and professional levels. On the collegiate level, conference tournaments are imminent, with amazing storylines such as Iowa’s Caitlin Clark on the verge of breaking the all-time scoring record in a career. The highly anticipated March-Madness tournament for women and men is something worth tracking as there are many Cinderella stories, bracket challenges, and rivalries renewed.
As for the NBA, the second half of the season is in progress. Down this stretch, many end-of-the-year honors, such as the MVP, All-NBA selections, and Rookie of the Year discussion, come to the forefront. In addition, the playoffs are within striking distance as many teams try to get an opportunity for the Play-In tournament to see if they can pull off a miracle and compete for an NBA Championship. For instance, the Miami Heat were an extremely low seed and still made it to the NBA Finals last year. Also, the NBA has promising young stars to watch, such as Anthony Edwards, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Victor Wembanyama.
Another sport worth watching is baseball, which is known as America’s national pastime. I will admit baseball does take a while to get into, but there is still excitement that comes with it as home runs increase annually. Major League Baseball teams are in spring training, while collegiate baseball teams are in the middle of their season. In terms of Southern University, baseball is the institution’s most successful sports program, with an impressive 27 SWAC titles and several Hall of Famers. Baseball has a lot of prestigious history and is worth getting into.
However, football is not quite over, as a new league of football will debut on March 30th, which is the United Football League (UFL). There are slightly different rules for this, but it’s a good filler for the big leagues, such as college football and the NFL.
As you can see, sports are year-round, and there are many sports to get into, like basketball, baseball, racing, track and field, tennis, and the Olympics in some cases. So, if you’re searching for a sport to get into, give these a try.
