In a world that often seems to function on a monochromatic spectrum, I find solace and joy in being unapologetically Black, especially within the vibrant tapestry of HBCU culture at Southern University and A&M College. There’s an unspoken magic that comes with strutting through the campus, draped in the rich hues of melanin, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Firstly, let’s address the undeniable fact that Southern University is the epitome of Black excellence. We’ve got a campus that’s practically a runway of melanin goddesses and gods, making every stroll to class a living, breathing fashion show. Who needs Milan Fashion Week when you’ve got the bold and beautiful styles of Pretty Wednesday parading across the yard?
Now, let’s talk about the unspoken language we share. It’s like being part of a secret society where every nod, dap, and “what’s good?” carries the weight of a thousand cultural connections. You can’t walk through the Student Union without catching vibes that feel like a family reunion. It’s as if our ancestors are throwing us a spiritual pep rally, cheering us on with every step.
And oh, the culinary delights that surround us! Southern University has its own flavor profile that could put any Michelin-starred restaurant to shame. Well, maybe not that good, but Red Bean Monday slaps! And those Tony burgers definitely get you through your days on the Bluff.
Let’s not forget the unapologetic discussions in classrooms that celebrate our voices. (In most cases) In the hallowed halls of Southern University, we don’t just study history; we shape it. It’s a place where our narratives aren’t footnotes but the main chapters, where we’re encouraged to speak up, speak out, and challenge the status quo with an unyielding sense of self. As long as it’s not against our own administration, then you’re good to go.
Being unapologetically Black at Southern University means embracing the resiliency that flows through our veins like an unstoppable current. It’s recognizing that our presence on this campus isn’t just a statement; it’s a celebration. We don’t tiptoe around our Blackness; we march to the rhythm of our ancestors, leaving an indelible mark on the legacy of Southern University.
So, as I navigate the halls of this illustrious institution, I do so with my head held high, my stride purposeful, and my Blackness unapologetic. Because in the grand mosaic of life, Southern University is the vibrant brushstroke that paints a picture of unfiltered Black joy and excellence. And who wouldn’t want to be part of that masterpiece? I could probably name a few people, but they don’t go to Southern, so that makes them irrelevant anyway.
