The Jaguar Activity Board was back in action by popular demand, revving up the campus with a week-long extravaganza: “You Got Spring Fest!” Bursting with nostalgic vibes from the 2000s, this event-packed week was set to ignite the student body with excitement and fun. Students grooved at Jagscade: Back to the Beats, indulged in Late Night Pretty Wednesday, engaged in stimulating discussions at 801 and Talk, presented a return of the Springest Concert, and ended with a traditional Crawfish Festival at Mayberry.
The week started with the “You Got Served” movie premiere where students were able to watch the film that inspired the week at the university Rec Lawn and get into the 2000s mood for the upcoming days ahead.
Monday saw the arrival of Jagscade: Back to the Beats event. Held at the FG Clark Activity Center, this silent headphone party offered students a unique experience to groove to music on various channels while fostering interactions with peers. Attendees immersed themselves in the lively atmosphere, engaging in spontaneous connections and shared moments. Jagscade provided a platform for students to unwind, connect, and revel in the communal spirit. The event’s fusion of music and camaraderie aimed to encapsulate the vibrant essence of campus life.
The week then took a twist on Wednesday for Late-Night Pretty Wednesday. The late-night pretty Wednesday was a mixture of skating, glow-in-the-dark bike riding, and unity of all students in the commuters’ parking lot dressed in their best early 2000s outfits. A crowd favorite of the night was the new initiates of the Beta Sigma Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity making their very first appearance on the Bluff. They were also accompanied by the rest of Southern’s Divine 9 organizations.
Haley Green, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, expressed that. “JAB did their big one and I was very surprised at how everything came together every day. My favorite was Late Night Pretty Wednesday because I was able to see the yard full as well as I enjoyed the fireworks.”
Thursday saw a star-studded lineup of events hosted by JAB, starting with 801 & Talk and the highly anticipated Spring Fest Concert. The 801 & Talk speaker series featured Terrence J, renowned actor and former host of 106 & Park, as the guest, with Jazmon DeRousselle as the host. The engaging conversations revolved around questions from both the student body and Ms. Jazmon. Meanwhile, the Spring Fest Concert, held in the mini-dome, captivated attendees with performances by Hunxho, Level, Foxx, and Lloyd. Lloyd, in particular, left a lasting impression on the crowd by addressing mental health and the importance of perseverance, all while evoking the nostalgic presence of the 2000s.
The week closed off with an event called the “Bluff Fest.” The “Bluff Fest” was held on Mayberry’s lawn and featured festivities including free crawfish, novelty items, food trucks, opportunities for face drawings, personalized license plates, henna tattoos, and ice cream made of liquid nitrogen.
Mariah Lyons, a junior majoring in Nursing, stated that “The Bluff Fest was a great stress reliever before the end of the year. Students have been very stressed after midterms so this week was a great time to have fun and relax. Bluff Fest consisted of many joyous activities that were very college-friendly for all. No one I know could say they didn’t have a great time at any of the events. I can’t wait to see what events are planned for next year!”
Jaguar Activity Board Traditions Chair, Briana Freeman, stated, “Planning SpringFest was pretty interesting–it’s exciting seeing everyone coming up with different ideas! My favorite event was Late Night Pretty Wednesday. It was a vibe and the firework show was my favorite part of the entire night; it made it more memorable.”
Overall, Spring Fest was an opportunity for all students to connect by making unforgettable memories with a week packed with events.
