Southern University is profoundly known for being the only HBCU with a system. However, it doesn’t mean that sibling rivalries won’t take place. The Southern University (SUBR) baseball team faced off against the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) team at Lee Hines Stadium. SUBR entered the game wanting a win before their upcoming tournament against Alcorn State.
The game commenced with senior pitcher Drew Lasseigne from SUBR on the mound, but SUNO took an early lead in the first inning with a home run. However, SUBR quickly responded in the bottom of the third inning, leveling the score at 1-1. As the game progressed, SUBR gained momentum, steadily increasing their lead, while SUNO attempted to keep pace by scoring two more runs throughout the game. Notably, in the bottom of the 4th inning, SUNO’s pitching struggles became evident as they hit four batters in a row, providing the Jaguars with more scoring opportunities. Despite this, redshirt freshman pitcher Charles Green, junior pitcher Nyle Banks, freshman pitcher Peyton Huff, and junior pitcher Joseph Semien of SUBR successfully kept SUNO at bay, not allowing any hits, runs, errors, or home runs.
The game’s turning point came with significant contributions from junior outfielder Kyle Radcliffe, sophomore outfielder Kamryn Byrd, and senior infielder Caleb Tart, who helped SUBR secure a substantial lead. Radcliffe’s RBI, Byrd’s home run and Tart’s two-run RBI propelled SUBR far ahead on the scoreboard. In the end, SUBR dominated the game, scoring 10 runs with 5 hits and 0 errors. SUNO managed only 3 runs, 5 hits, and 3 errors. Post-game interviews revealed insights into SUBR’s victory.
Junior third baseman/infielder Darren Johnson emphasized the importance of patience, attention to detail, and capitalizing on SUNO’s mistakes as critical factors in their success stating, “We played with patience and did the little things right today, and capitalized off or their mistakes.”
Additionally, junior first and third baseman Dylan Jones shed light on the team’s journey toward victory. After losing to the University of Lafayette on March 19th, the Office of Student Media learned that the team held an open floor discussion to address their shortcomings and commit to improvement. Following this meeting, the players pledged to hold themselves accountable, maintain discipline, and approach practice sessions with greater seriousness stating, “After our meeting last night, we decided to hold ourselves more accountable and stay disciplined.”
Looking ahead, the Jaguar baseball team’s next home game will be March 28th, 2024, at 6 P.M, where they will face Prairie View A&M. Please be sure to go and support the baseball team throughout the season.
