There is always a way to elevate a team while building the roster to put the program in the best position for success possible. This is not only done through recruitment or national signing day but also by hosting team walk-on tryouts, which is traditionally done during the spring semester of a college academic year. This is a day for men who attend college as full-time students who believe they can contribute to a program while enhancing their athletic abilities along the way.
Recently, the Southern University Jaguars administration hosted on campus walk on tryouts in A.W. Mumford stadium. Numerous young men came out to showcase their athletic ability to play football at the collegiate level. Walking onto a team can be very complex, especially depending on how many roster spots are left, what positions need to be added to, what skills the player has that separates him from others, and most importantly, the type of character he presents. All of these are keen on a program’s success and how they operate from within. A player can either help a team or break a team. This is a selective process for a head coach because of all the key factors that play into the fold. Today’s walk-on tryout showcased all positions on offense and defense except for quarterbacks and tight ends. The prospects who came out today were measured upon their athletic attributes throughout individual skill training with their position coaches. Each coach pushed the limits of the players throughout the individual drills.
Since no quarterback came to try out, the Jags sophomore quarterback Noah Bodden played a role in today’s tryout. He assisted with helping the wide receivers in their drills, throwing the ball, and guiding them. This resulted in wide receivers and running backs matching up against Linebackers and defensive backs during one-on-one drills, which tested both sides of the ball’s playmaking abilities and defensive skills. Many good and decent reps from both sides of the ball included walk-on wide receivers Kenneth Johnson and Elijah White. On the defensive side, they were able to have a few shutdowns deflecting some of Noah’s passes.
Many walk-ons made it pro and came out as a legend. Jag Nation looks forward to seeing their next Hall Of Famer.
