Deshaun Watson is an NFL quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, but before he was a Brown, he was with the Texans until he ran into some trouble. Deshaun Watson was accused of sexually assaulting 24 women. This ultimately led to Watson sitting out a whole season with the Texans before he was traded to the Browns and was given a new contract worth $235 million dollars fully guaranteed. However, the legal action is more of the story.
Previously, I had questions about how the NFL would handle the situation considering they have not handled punishments fairly for certain violations. The NFL has a strict code of conduct, but their punishment is never fair considering severe violations got weak consequences. Ridley is gone for a whole year because of gambling against his own team, but Ezekiel Elliot had done domestic violence but only got six games. It leads me to wonder does NFL know what is important to handle or are they willing to hurt the public for money to see superstars on the field.
Deshaun Watson has talked to the media and has expressed everything he did was consensual, but to the public eye nobody believes that. However, he was in court and the judge found that he should not face any criminal charges, which did not sit right with a lot of people. The NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decided to have a judge look over the case, so a suspension can be decided. Judge Sue L. Robinson, who is a female, look over tons of pages of evidence against Deshaun Watson and her decision was a six-game suspension. Many women and NFL fans were infuriated by the decision.
Personally, I was shocked by the decision considering that it was a female judge, and I expected the consequence to be more severe, but it did not play out that way. Roger Goodell could file an appeal to have another judge look at it, but that would contradict his statement of whatever the judge decides we will accept. I felt that it was the right decision, but I wondered how more severe it could get if a women looked over it considering it was a domestic violence case.
However, Roger Goodell did file an appeal and assigned judge Peter C. Harvey, the former attorney general of New Jersey, the job of deciding on the case. Deshaun Watson would then be suspended for 11 games and that was final, but still, it did not sit right with the league. Many speculations have occurred such as people feeling like it was fair because he already sat out one season, but others feel that it should be an automatic suspension.
I feel like it was the wrong call because compared to other non-harmful acts that got more severe penalties, Deshaun should have a year suspension. However, I get why he is not gone for a full season.
