It is that time of the year again with the event many Southern students love. That event being “Midnight Madness.” The event is a tradition that draws in a big crowd of students that include every classification who watch and observe their fellow Jaguars take over the complex for a night filled with high energy and nice vibes. As the day winded down on the second week of school, the Horace Moody Intramural Sports Complex hosted an event filled with pick-up games in basketball and volleyball. The event was a huge success according to students and event coordinator Mr. Tyrone Tanner.
The event was hosted by the intramural sports complex faculty members with Coach Tanner being one of the primary orchestrators of the event. We asked Coach Tanner the meaning behind Midnight Madness and his response was passionate, “This was something I started back in 2016…at first it was just basketball, then I added volleyball because the girls wanted something to do.” Since then, Midnight Madness has been held, besides Fall 2021 due to Covid-19, during the start of the fall and spring semester. The event was nothing short of a success Coach Tanner believes. When asked about the turnout of the event, Coach Tanner was ecstatic. Tanner said, “I haven’t seen the count yet, but I know it was like three hundred something males and about three hundred something females that came in and this was my first time having a DJ, so that made it much better.” One thing for sure, the event was filled with enjoyment, laughter, and it was just a great night out on The Bluff. With the start of football season approaching, Midnight Madness is just one of plenty fun activities that will be nice to enjoy here at Southern University.
