Go big or go home; that is exactly what Coach Dooley and the Jaguars did at the Pete Richardson Classic against Florida Memorial University! There had been a lot of anticipation with this first game of the season since Coach Dooley’s return to Southern was a 12-year gap since 2010. He was a part of the infamous Pete Richardson coaching staff from 1997-2010. Well, the wait is over! Coach Dooley and Jags entered and exited A.W. Mumford Stadium dominating FMU with an 86-0 win.
The team’s numbers put up Saturday night were record-breaking; 86 points, 64 plays in total for 611 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. “This is just the momentum we needed going into next week’s game,” said Glen Brown who had a pick 6 Saturday night against the Lions. “We wanted to put up 100!” he also said.
Although offensively and defensively Southern played a balanced game overall there are some things the team may want to tighten up going into this week’s match-up with the LSU Tigers. It’s all in the details; giving up 135 yards in penalties across four quarters, 154 yards in kick returns and an interception might be the difference between a win and a loss for the Jags. Perfecting
those fine details before dueling a heavy hitter like LSU will be necessary for the Jags to come out on top.
According to linebacker and leading rusher Jordan Lewis, there seems to be no worries or doubts in his mind about the upcoming matchup with LSU. “We’re just ready to play. To go out there with a new playbook, a new offense, and perform to the best of our ability. We just want to do our best and show out for our fans” Lewis stated. Lewis is a versatile player which aids in his ability to help his team wherever he can. Lewis doesn’t mind it, ” Whatever my coaches want me to do, I’m going to do it,” he said. You can bet that his versatility will be a key factor this season.
While we didn’t see some of our heavy hitters like Jason Dumas take the field Saturday night against FMU, we expect that to be a different story versus the LSU tigers. A strong defense will be needed for a Jaguar to win, there’s no doubt about it. If the Jags continue to attack the ball from whistle to whistle or as Coach Dooley would say “Spot the ball.”.
