Maybe it isn’t as disturbing to people as it should be, but I find it disturbing that students aren’t contributing to the evolvement of this university. I did not choose this institution to solely get an education but to have an impact on the people around me, especially since this is where I spend most of my time, money, and early adulthood.
College is not only a place where people come to earn a degree, but it embodies opportunities for students to meet future co-workers, employers or employees, potential life long friends, loved ones, and most importantly it opens doors for possibilities that may not be accessible to those that are not enrolled in a secondary form of education.
We were smart enough to take the first step by enrolling at a college, but there has to be something exceptional about young African-Americans who choose an HBCU for higher education.
It is no coincidence that we are all in this together; every occasion in life has its purpose. There is a purpose for SU even while going through “one of the most difficult periods of its enduring history”, said Dr. Brandon K. Dumas, Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. We must find it in ourselves to grasp the purpose of our existence at this very moment, realizing what we are rightly here to do and not accepting the norm.
The disconnection between the Jaguars who are involved in the progression of their university and those who just go through the motions on their journey for a degree is counterproductive. It is critical to exceed at the one thing that we all naturally came here to do, and there is no doubt that we must take care of ourselves first because no one will do it for us.
Being financially stable and being able to give our families better lives are all dear to our hearts, but why stop at our immediate families when a whole nation of blacks are our family? We owe it to ourselves, our ancestors, and our off springs to shed light on one another especially being intellectuals in a society built to completely destroy the black community.
The close-mindedness has to fade away thoroughly so that we can unite as one and plant an eternal seed for our black people. Knowing of the weak lineage that we are leaning on, the betterment has to start with us, the students, and it already has. We are the ones chosen by a higher power to be here so we must pay homage. We must care for one another and enrich our community by any means necessary.
There is generally one obvious reason why predominantly white institutions have better institutions and are constantly improving, because they contribute to the wellbeing of their schools. We can enjoy our lives to the fullest as young people and still devote time to the overall prosperity of our union.
Uplifting our people should be a priority and a commitment regardless of if we weren’t tacitly reliving slavery. I believe in many things and one of them is that if my generation does not make ta change as soon as possible, all potential and hope for the future of black people will be lost. Every second of every day the time is now or never.
