This Saturday the Jaguars look to get their first victory of the season in their home opener against the Prairie View A&M Panthers (1-1, 1-0 SWAC). The Jaguars are currently 0-2 after losses to Houston 62-13 and Northwestern St. 55-14. The panthers open up the season with a blowout win of rival Texas Southern 37-13 and lost the following week to texas state 28-3.
Saturdays home opener marks the first home opener for head coach Dawson Odums. Saturday is also a home coming for Prairie View A&M head Coach Heishma Northern. Northern is a member of the 1993 Southern football team that will be honored at halftime.
In their last game the panthers featured two quarterbacks Jerry Lovelocke their returning starter and lefty De’Auntre Smiley.
Smiley started last years match up between the jaguars and the panthers. Smiley had a career day against the jags as he passed for 398 yards and rushed for 170 as he lead the panthers to a 49-29 victory.
A key matchup in Saturdays game will be Jaguars quarterback dray joseph and his recivers against the panthers pass defense.
Joesph and receiver Lee Doss picking up where they left off as all-swac performers.
Sophomore receiver Willie Quinn has emerged as a playmaker for the jags while doubling as a kick returner. Quinn leads the swac in total touchdowns with 3 (2 receiving and 1 return touchdown. He also leads the swac in all purpose yards.
Joseph leads the swac in pass efficiency and the panthers lead the swac in pass defense efficiency.
The southern ground games looks to get a boost this weekend as redshirt freshman running back leonard tillery returns from a knee injury. Tillery is player that the coaching staff is very high on.
The jags have struggled to run the ball and stop the run this season.
Linebacker Daniel Brown has been a bright spot for the jags defensively recording double digit tackles in both games. Brown is the second leader tackler in the swac.
Two key players for the jaguars will be suspended this game. Starting receiver Lee Doss is suspended for the first quarter and starting linebacker Anthony Balancier will be suspended the whole game.
Balancier is suspened do to comments made by him in reference to last weeks game.
Sophomore linebacker Treyveon Evans will be starting in place of Balancier.
