The excitement is building on the Bluff as Southern University gears up for another basketball season full of promise and determination. Both the men’s and women’s teams are coming in hungry, focused, and ready to show that Southern basketball is still a force in the SWAC. The energy around campus feels different this year players are locked in, the coaches are confident, and the fans can already sense something special brewing.
For the men’s team, head coach Kevin Johnson has built a squad that knows how to win. Coming off a strong 20–12 record and 15–3 in conference play, the Jaguars are bringing back key players who’ve already proven they can handle the pressure. Graduate Student Malachi McReed is expected to lead the offense once again with his clutch scoring ability, while Senior Guard Michael Jacobs brings the shooting spark that can change games in a heartbeat. Add in Sophomore Guard Jayce Depron, a rising leader known for his toughness and effort, and you’ve got a team ready to compete with anyone. The Jags’ fast-paced offense and aggressive defense make them tough to beat, and if they stay consistent, they could easily land another top-three SWAC finish. With a few tough non-conference matchups ahead, Southern’s resilience will be tested early but that’s exactly the type of challenge that could prepare them for another deep postseason run.
On the women’s side, head coach Carlos Funchess and his Lady Jaguars are stepping into the new season with high expectations and unfinished business. After a 21–15 record and a strong push in SWAC play last year, the team is bringing back a core that’s as talented as it is motivated. Junior Guard Zaria Hurston leads the charge with her smooth scoring touch and confidence, while Mykayla Cunningham, also a Junior Guard controls the tempo and keeps the offense flowing. Inside, Senior Center, Xyllize Harrison continues to anchor the defense and battle on the boards. Together, they form the heart of a team that plays with energy, chemistry, and purpose. The Lady Jags are projected to finish around 22–10 overall and 14–4 in SWAC play, making them one of the top favorites to win the conference and punch a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. With both programs stacked with talent, heart, and hunger, this season feels like a turning point for Southern basketball. The Jaguars and Lady Jaguars aren’t just playing for wins they’re playing for pride, legacy, and the fans who pack the stands every game. Baton Rouge better get ready because this year, the Bluff is bringing the heat.
