The Star-Spangled Banner croons in the background as Southern Lab takes the field for the opening kickoff against Central Private on Thursday night. Southern Lab, ranked #3 in Louisiana’s Division IV select standings, entered the game determined to make Senior Night special. Families rallied behind their sons, knowing tonight marked the seniors’ final home game. The band’s trumpets rang out, their green and yellow uniforms shining under the lights as the energy built on the field. Not even two minutes in, junior running back Anthony Weatherspoon scored the first touchdown. After the play, the Kittens went for a two-point conversion—quarterback Jerry Bottley threw a dart and found Jayce Wright in the end zone.
Every chance Central Private had, Southern Lab’s defense shut it down, swallowing their offense and stopping nearly every running yard they tried to gain. Anthony Weatherspoon finished the quarter with another touchdown, and Jayden Hatch added a two-point conversion, ending the first quarter 32–0.
“I just wanted to be great and have fun with my teammates . . . we’ve been building chemistry all season, and it’s starting to show, ” Weatherspoon.
Central Private finally broke through late in the quarter, cutting the score to 32–7, ending the second quarter. During halftime, the school, along with their families, honored the seniors for their achievements over the years, with each player receiving applause. Coach Darrell Asberry said he was pleased with how his team handled the early lead. “You always want to take control of games like this early . . . I thought tonight we came out and we wanted to establish a passing game, which we did,” Asberry said.
Southern Lab returned from halftime with a drive like no other. Weatherspoon struck again with another touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion from Logan Dauphine. Terrance Hunter capped off the quarter with a strong touchdown run, pushing the lead to 46–7.
To close out Senior Night, sophomore Jayden Hatch delivered one of the game’s intriguing moments, dragging three defenders into the end zone for a touchdown ending the game 52-7. “I was determined to get that touchdown; it’s second nature at this point,” said Hatch. “I definitely had to show out for the seniors for their last home game.”
The last whistle blew at Jaguar Field, and the seniors celebrated a well-played victory in their final home game. Looking ahead, the Kittens’ next goal is the state championship, with optimism high for the next game.
“It feels good—I played at Southern Lab, so I understand the tradition,” said Asberry. “You’re not just coaching a team; you’re representing a history and a community that wants championships.”
Senior Night wasn’t just a win—it was a celebration of the players, their legacy, and the
Southern Lab community that supports them every step of the way.
