The Southern University Lady Jaguars Volleyball team took on the Southern University of New Orleans Knights in a midweek matchup at Seymour Gym on Tuesday, October 21st. The Lady Jaguars came into this game sporting a record of 8-12, most recently coming off a win against Dillard last Wednesday. They came into this game having won 5 of their last 6 matches, as they look to continue their momentum against the Lady Knights.
The first set began, and the Lady Jags got out to an early lead against their opponents, 13-5, forcing a mid-set timeout from the Lady Knights. The aggressive mentality that the Jaguars came out with is what helped propel them to getting the big lead early, as they forced the action a lot in the first set. The SUNO Knights came out of the timeout with a little bit more energy, score 4 straight points out of the break. They would eventually end up cutting the Lady Jaguar lead down to 5, but that would be where their momentum would end. Southern would start to pick back up the pace and force the initiative, winning the set 25-19. The Lady Jaguars would end the first set with a total of 15 kills. For reference, this would be the greatest number of kills in a set that they had put up all season. The SUNO Lady Knights put up a respectable fight, but ultimately the Lady Jaguars attacking proved to be too much for the opposing team to handle. The Lady Jags will be looking to carry this energy into the 2nd Set.
The 2nd set would begin, and the Lady Jaguars would continue their dominance. They would get out to a commanding 10-3 lead, which was pioneered by the astonishing striking and spikes from the home team. The continued pressure is what put the SUNO Lady Knights in precarious positions, to which they could not respond. The final score ended up being 25-12.
The 3rd set started, and Southern managed to handle business and win the 3rd set to sweep the game 3 sets to none. The Jags took advantage of the momentum that they had accumulated in the 2 early sets, blasting the Knights out the gate and eventually winning the 3rd and final set 25-14. The story of the game really for the Lady Jaguars was pace of play and momentum. They were able to pile it on to the opposing team once they took advantage of both serving and attacking errors. The Jaguars get ready to start their one week road trip against the Jackson State Lady Tigers on Monday, October 27th at 4 pm.
