It was senior night for the Jaguar volleyball as they took on the Braves of Alcorn State. Coming off a big 5-1 win over Arkansas Pine-Bluff, the squad was seeking to carry the momentum into this match up. The Jaguars were competing against an attack heavy Alcorn State offense, but stood tall, playing great defensively to counter Braves attack.
Sophomore, goalkeeper, Ava Droze garnered 2 saves early in the first period to give the Jaguars alittle momentum. Alcorn State stayed on the attack keeping the pressure on the Jaguar defense, but it didn’t take long for them to get down field and score.
Graduate student forward Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles brushed through a host of defenders, making the score 1-0 just before the 25-minute mark. The Jags would try to keep the pressure on by scoring themselves, tying the game 1-1. Alcorn State wasted no time firing back at the Jaguar defense, putting up another shot on goal which was no issue for sophomore goalkeeper Ava Droze, getting her third save of the half.
Coming out of the half, Alcorn showed no signs of slowing down from the previous half, putting up two shots early that were both to no avail. A few drives later, Alcorn State stuck back, this time on target, making the score 2-1. Though the Jaguars were fighting back, they missed opportunities while in scoring range. This would prove detrimental for the Jaguars, leaving Alcorn a plethora of chances to capitalize, which they would do making the score 3-1. On the upside, the Jaguars recorded 8 saves versus the Alcorn offense. The squad also had 7 shots with 4 of those being on goal shots, however they lacked the fire power to pull out the win.
The Jaguars will be back at it, on the road against Jackson State on October 31.
