“Is a black job…” the words coming from political activist, Laura Loomer, to Jasmine Crockett, a U.S. representative for Texas’s 30th congressional district. How did this tension begin?
Let’s start from the beginning, shall we? A few days ago, Rep. Jasmine Crockett appeared on CNN to share her concerns about a House resolution honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk. She expressed disappointment that only two white members of Congress voted against the proposal, despite Kirk’s history of rhetoric that many view as harmful to communities of color.
In response, Loomer launched multiple racist attacks on social media, referring to Crockett using derogatory language, including the phrase “ghetto Black [censored] who hate America.” Her remarks sparked widespread backlash, with many calling out the racism and misogyny within her post. Leaving America in disbelief and disappointment, especially since President Donald Trump shared his opinion about Crockett shortly after.
While signing executive orders in the Oval Office, President Trump made a series of remarks targeting Rep. Crockett and Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. He referred to Rep. Crockett as a “low IQ person,” a comment that drew immediate attention and criticism. In the same exchange, he grouped Crockett with Rep. Omar, stating that he “can’t believe a congressperson between [Crockett] and Ilhan Omar.” He went on to joke that “the head of Somalia doesn’t want [Omar] back,” referencing her Somali heritage in a manner that many interpreted as dismissive and controversial. “He’s a bully, he doesn’t like women, he abuses women, and doesn’t have a high IQ,” said Dr. Ronald Jackson, a professor at Southern University.
Later that day, Rep. Crockett made an appearance on MSNBC Live, Microsoft National Broadcasting Company, addressing the comments and emphasizing her stance against political bullying. “I want the American people to know that when you stand up to a bully, you win,” she said. “Do not back down. Do not bend… If everybody starts to bend, for sure, what is left of our democracy will be gone. And unfortunately, that is exactly what he wants.”
This is not the first time President Trump has publicly questioned Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s intelligence. In July, he challenged her to an intelligence test and repeated similar criticisms during an interview on Meet the Press, calling her “definitely a low-IQ person” and expressing skepticism about her role in the Democratic Party. The repeated attacks have sparked backlash from students and voters alike. “He’s insensitive and calls anyone who disagrees with him [unintelligent] regardless of circumstance, and this whole situation just amplifies that,” said Jordan Parker, a sophomore psychology major at Southern University.
The conflict between Rep. Jasmine Crockett and her critics shows how tense things have gotten in today’s political world. What started as a disagreement over a House resolution quickly turned into personal attacks and name-calling, some of which crossed serious lines. But Rep. Crockett hasn’t backed down.
Her response has resonated with many, especially young voters and students who see her as a symbol of strength and authenticity. “I feel that what she is saying is the truth that most are afraid to say,” said Ja’Asia Robertson, a sophomore nursing major at Southern University. In a political climate often clouded by division, Crockett’s stance continues to inspire those who value truth, courage, and the voices willing to defend both.
