On August 23, 2025, Councilman Anthony Kenny hosted a community clean-up in the Scotlandville neighborhood, focusing on the avenues behind Southern University’s campus. Volunteers, including members of the Southern University NAACP, worked to clear litter and improve the appearance of Avenues E, F, and C.
Councilman Kenny, a Southern alumnus and former SGA President (2018–2019), has maintained strong ties to the university community. During his student leadership, he launched the food pantry in the student union, which continues to serve students today. Now, as a councilman, he is turning his attention toward addressing challenges facing students and the wider community.
“With only about 2,500 on-campus beds for more than 8,000 students, my ultimate goal is to provide more off-campus housing options and make living in the Scotlandville area easier,” Kenny said during the clean-up.
For Southern NAACP members, the day was an opportunity to give back and build stronger connections with the surrounding neighborhood. “It gave us a chance to step outside the campus gates and really work in the community that supports us,” Dillan Harmon, sophomore majoring in Therapeutic Recreation shared.
The clean-up not only beautified local streets but also underscored the importance of collaboration between students and community leaders in shaping a better environment for both residents and the university population.
