I’ve always wondered how individuals can secure jobs and internships within the sports world. One thing people have always told me is to remain authentic throughout the application process. Another important tip is to have a great resume: focus on experiences that are relevant to the job you’re applying for, and make sure to include keywords that will stand out to the people reviewing your application.
Some of my favorite websites for finding internships and jobs are LinkedIn and TeamWork Online. LinkedIn allows you to connect with corporate professionals as well as students who are pursuing similar goals. TeamWork Online features opportunities across a variety of sports, from baseball to basketball, and allows you to explore different career options based on your interests.
Another key piece of advice is to create genuine relationships with people in the industry. Many professionals are willing to advocate for individuals they see potential in, helping them land valuable opportunities. I also recommend attending events, job fairs, and panels, and making connections with people who work for teams, leagues, media outlets, agencies, and more.
Overall, the main lesson I continue to work on today is to stay persistent and respectful. A few rejections will never outweigh the number of “yeses” you can eventually receive. Every application, every conversation, and every opportunity to connect moves you one step closer to your goals in the sports industry.
