Southern University sports has made a drastic change in the past three years. With Women’s Soccer, Women’s Bowling, and Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams winning championships, what about the other sports hosted here at Southern University?
Amidst all the winning here at Southern, one team that stands out to me the most—in terms of both need and deserve a championship—is the Women’s Volleyball Team. The women’s volleyball team hasn’t won a SWAC championship since 1998. That’s over two decades without bringing the trophy home—far too long for a program with such passion, resilience, and talent.
Year after year, the team puts in the work, competing with grit and determination. They’ve battled through tough seasons, roster turnovers, and close calls. But each fall, they return to the court hungry for more. Not only would winning give the girls momentum to keep fighting, but it would also show everyone else across the SWAC that Southern’s volleyball team has the strength and dedication to bring home a championship and be competitive in the conference.
Bringing home a championship would not only add a trophy to the case, but it would also bring well-deserved attention to the team and the school. It could boost recruitment efforts and attract more women who are willing to play at an HBCU to consider Southern as their home. A win could also continue to shed light on the immense talent women-led sports are bringing to the Bluff—proving that it’s not just the men’s teams bringing in the glory, but the women as well.
The Southern University Women’s Volleyball Team is long overdue for their moment. Their time is coming—not just to make history again, but to prove that perseverance and passion truly pay off. A championship would mean more than just a title—it would be a symbol of years of hard work, late-night practices, heartbreaking losses, and unwavering dedication.
This team has laid the groundwork. Now, what they need from us is support. It’s time to pack the gym like we do for football and basketball. Time to rally behind these women and help lift them to the finish line. Because when they do win, it won’t just be a win for volleyball—it will be a win for the entire Southern University community. The championship would represent not only the culmination of hard work and dedication, wins, and losses, but also serve as a tribute to the women who won before them and paved the way.
