Southern University. The last time we won the SWAC football championship was in 2003. A full 22 years ago. The way that our football team and the response it gets from the school raises the question: Are we okay with mediocracy? While it’s probably not the mediocracy, it’s more “blind loyalty” that we have towards Southern. Who doesn’t love their HBCU? People from other schools, those not in college, high schoolers, even alumni, say, “Nobody is at Southern for the football. We’re here for the band,” Which, unfortunately, is true.
The Human Jukebox is almost single-handedly saving our sports retention. I understand that the loyalty we have towards our school is unmatched. We used to be a force to be reckoned with. However, we need to stop and smell the flowers. For a Division 1 school, we are not good. We’re so focused on the tradition of Southern University that it’s like we’re stuck in the past almost and can’t see the future for what it is, we can’t let our past put on rose-colored glasses for our present. Now I’ll give it to the basketball teams, both Men’s and Women’s, being the SWAC 2024-2025 Champions, our women going to March Madness, and our Lady Jaguar Soccer team winning the SWAC as well, I can’t say that all of our sports suck we have to give credit where it’s due. But next time you’re looking through the sports results and seeing that we just got our behinds handed to us in yet another game, ask yourself, Are we really okay with this? Is this the best that we can do?
