The Southern Lady Jaguars basketball team made great strides in 2025. After capturing the 2025 SWAC championship, the Lady Jaguars have continued their success. Just last week, the Lady Jaguars took on No. 16 UC San Diego as a No.16 ranked seed themselves. This matchup secured the Lady jaguars their first ever NCAA tournament win, with the final score being 68-56.
The Lady Jaguars led by 20 points going into halftime, shooting 67% from three and 59% from the field. There is no doubt that the Lady Jaguars were destined for victory. The Lady Jaguars won, and advanced to their next opponent, the No.1 ranked UCLA Bruins with a commendable record of 30-2 on the season. There is no question, this would be a rigorous matchup.
Even with Southern women’s basketball’s recent strides, their success was short-lived. Many may questioned the type of disadvantage the Lady Jaguars were faced with by having to go against the No.1 seed in only the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Although an upset was possible, looking at the record of both teams and the schedules they held throughout the season, The Lady Jaguars were the underdogs.
The circumstances were not necessarily in the Lady Jaguars’ favor, but that didn’t affect what kind of mindset they showed during their matchup against the Bruins. If anything, they had less to lose because fans may not expect them to win.
Regardless of the outcome, the Lady Jaguars. this year and beyonf will continue to break barriers and prove themselves as worthy opponents. Whether they won or lost, they had much to be proud of with the work they have done this season and the exposure they have produced for themselves. The Jaguar nations says, “Well done.”
