Kameron Byrd, a 20-year-old junior outfielder for Southern University’s baseball team, wears number 20. A Mass Communications major from Loganville, GA, Byrd is making an impact in his second season with the Jaguars after transferring from Mississippi Valley State. Having played baseball since the age of four, Byrd has developed a strong sense of discipline and leadership. His dedication to the game and his teammates has allowed him to build lasting relationships throughout his athletic career.
On the field, Byrd is recognized for his focus and exceptional defensive abilities. His guiding principle as a player is straightforward: “Keep the ball in front of the wall.” On Wednesday, March 19, he drew a walk and reached first base against the University of the Incarnate Word. This commitment has made him a key player in the Jaguars’ lineup. “I’ve been lucky to form strong relationships with both my teammates and opponents,” said Byrd. “The connections I’ve made through baseball are one of the things I cherish most about the game.”
As a Mass Communications major at Southern University, Byrd’s educational journey is equally important to him as his athletics. He’s found the transition to Southern University as a transfer student to be a valuable experience; however, Byrd’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. The biggest hurdle he’s faced has been staying healthy, both mentally and physically throughout the season. “It’s a long season, and there will be times when my body doesn’t feel the best, but I have to find a way to make it happen,” he explained. “I think about how the team depends on me and my family and the people I represent to overcome those times.”
Beyond the baseball diamond, he enjoys spending time in nature, particularly fishing. “I love to go fishing. It really gets my mind off of baseball and allows me to connect with nature” Byrd shared. This hobby provides him with the balance he needs outside of his demanding athletic schedule. Reflecting on the lessons he’s learned through baseball, Byrd highlighted the importance of staying level-headed. This mindset has been crucial in helping him handle the ups and downs of the game while keeping his focus on the bigger picture.
As Southern University’s baseball season continues, he keeps his head high and maintains a positive mindset. “I stay focused and positive by looking at everything as a blessing. I play every game like it’s my last so I have no regrets. One game doesn’t define the season, so I leave the negativity behind and look forward to the next opportunity that I get” he said. The Jaguars look forward to seeing how he continues to develop both on the field and in his academic pursuits.
