The second annual Tolson-Lockett History Quiz Bowl took place at the TT Allain Auditorium, once again bringing together students eager to test their knowledge of Black history and culture. Coordinated by Professor Terrell Wayne Johnson, A.B.D., for the second consecutive year, the event continues to grow in significance with plans to remain a staple for years to come.
Professor Johnson reflected on the inspiration behind the quiz bowl, stating, “Malcolm X, a leader in our struggle for equality, said ‘Only a fool would allow his enemy to educate his youth.’ Recognizing this shortfall, we in the History Department are working relentlessly to enlighten our students to their true history and the contributions to mankind on a global scale.” His words highlighted the need to create learning environments that honor and protect Black history.
This year’s competition featured four dynamic teams: Team Elohiem, The Talented Tenth, SWV2P, and the Black History Month Club. Over the course of four intense rounds, students demonstrated their dedication and knowledge. Team SWV2P ultimately won the overall competition, taking home the first-place prize of $200. Second- and third-place prizes of $150 and $100 were also awarded to top-performing teams.
Ean Price, a sophomore Agricultural Business major and member of SWV2P, explained the meaning behind his team’s name: “SWV2P stands for students who volunteer to participate.” He also shared insight into their preparation process. “Preparing for today, we individually all studied the material on our own. But once we got over here to the building to actually take the quiz, we all got together and studied over all the material, went through each and every question. Based on all prior knowledge, we were able to answer as many questions as possible, and that’s what ultimately pulled us over the edge.”
Sophomore Accounting major Amari Simmons shared why she felt drawn to participate: “I love to learn more about my history. I came from a school with a lot of white people, and I want to know more about Black history. I want to know more about my culture. So I felt like this was a fun and involving way to learn about my history more.”
The Tolson-Lockett History Quiz Bowl is all about celebrating academic success while also highlighting cultural pride and understanding our history. This year, Team SWV2P took home the top prize, and the event keeps encouraging students to really connect with their past. This passion helps pave the way for future participants to step into a future that’s full of knowledge and purpose.
