The Southern University Baseball Season is underway as they wrapped up a 3-game stretch at the 2025 HBCU Cactus Jack Classic. Southern is coming off a 22-29 season and 15-12 conference record. In terms of the HBCU Cactus Jack Classic last year, Southern went 1-2 in those games, winning only against Alcorn 10-4, but losing to Grambling 0-9 and Texas Southern 3-5. However, Southern did improve in this year’s results, particularly with the ability to score more runs. Southern finished the classic with an overall record of 2-1.
For the first game against Texas Southern, the Jags won 8-3. The Jags had one homerun by senior infielder Dylan Jones. Furthermore, the Jags had 6 Runs Batted In (RBI) and 14 hits in 33 at-bats.
The second game was against in-state bitter rival Grambling, but the Jags were on the losing end of that one, losing 10-20. The negative was the pitching department due to Grambling having 20 hits on 33 at-bat opportunities. However, the Southern Jags had some streaks of hope due to their hitting department having 1 homerun by redshirt senior infielder Jalon Mack. The Jaguars also had 8 RBIs.
The Jags did end the classic off on a high note, dominating Prairie View 12-2. The Jags had 2 home runs credited to junior outfielders Cardell Thibodeaux and Jacoby Radcliffe. Southern also had 10 hits on 30 at-bats. However, the pitching department stole the show only allowing Prairie View to have 2 hits on 28 at-bats.
The Jags last year were not as efficient hitting the baseball, having a .279 batting average, ranking 7th out of 12 teams. However, scoring an average of 10 runs to start the season with approximately a .367 batting average, shows promising signs for a developing Southern Jaguars baseball team.
Southern will continue their baseball season, playing LSU in Baton Rouge, LA at Alex Box Stadium at 2 PM on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025.
