Southern University’s very own Baseball Coach, Theodore Perkins (TJ) is known for his dual role as the strength and flexibility and outfield coach. He has not only transformed the physical performance of his athletes, but also played an instrumental part in supporting their mental health. Coach TJ understands that sports go beyond physical skill. His coaching technique emphasizes the importance of mental toughness.
Many athletes often focus solely on improving their physical abilities, overlooking the importance of mentally enhancing their performance. Coach TJ helps them shift this perspective, showing that taking care of their mind and embracing their emotions is just as crucial to success. He encourages athletes to understand the role mental stability plays in their overall performance on the field. For Coach TJ, the mental aspect of training is just as critical. “When you train, you’re also training your mind,” he adds. “Showing up is the first step, understanding why you’re training and how it will benefit you is next, and then pushing past mental and physical limitations is key. We want to move beyond what they think they can or cannot do.”

Genesis Prosper, a junior on the team, expressed how Coach TJ has helped his mental health by focusing on motivation. “He gives us that extra push we need, especially when we’re feeling down or off-track. It’s more than just physical training, it’s about believing in yourself and trusting the process.” Coach TJ recognizes that for many athletes, mental resilience is what sets them apart. In his words “When players come in as freshmen, the process can feel overwhelming. “At this stage in my life, I understand that getting to this level of competition already sets them apart. My job is to understand who they are mentally on the field and create an environment that challenges them to show up not just for themselves, but for their teammates as well.”
Coach TJ’s leadership methods center on supporting his athletes’ mental health while strengthening their bodies. “Nothing happens overnight; it takes time,” he says, echoing his belief that every player has the potential to turn challenges into opportunities. “As long as you have air in your lungs, you have the opportunity to make the most out of every situation.”
Through this approach, Coach TJ builds his athletes into better individuals. His dedication to both physical and mental wellness, has built a supportive environment for his athletes. One where they can thrive, not just in the game, but in life.
