Welcome to Southern University home of the Jaguars full of excellence, abundance, and finding your talking stage flirting with someone else in your plain view when they just said they wanted to lock in with you the night before. February is a very finicky month for a college campus. You don’t know whether you’re single, taken, or in a “Listen it’s complicated to explain” situation. Many people around Valentine’s Day get sort of a “funk” around them and who could blame them? Seeing love and couples almost everywhere and you’re sitting on your Twin XL thinking “I wonder if they’re thinking about me right now” knowing good and well that they’re grinding on someone else at a die lit party.
Feeling lonely on Valentine’s Day or the “Valentine’s Day funk” isn’t out of the ordinary and while it seems like everyone is boo’d up on V-Day around campus, most of these people are single and going through the same thing you are because while it feels like “Oh my god I’m single during Valentine’s Day it’s the end of the world,” it’s truthfully never that serious. Valentine’s Day isn’t just some magical day where you need to be in a relationship. You’ve been single for the other 364 days in the year. One more day will not hurt you. On a more serious note though, the V-Day funk is almost unshakable. It’s cold, you’re just trying to get to class, and you’re blocked by a couple hugging in the middle of the sidewalk.
I asked around campus what do people think the hype around Valentine’s Day is and I got a general answer. “Social Media” and I can’t help but agree. While I love Valentine’s Day and love the idea of just love in general, you can’t help but notice social media definitely has impacted Valentine’s Day heavily. It’s become a competition of who can get the best gift at this point and it’s seeped into people’s minds thinking they need to take their significant other on a cruise to the Bahamas or get them a Birkin collection. While I can definitely see you wanting to do what’s best for your partner, you are a broke college student and you know that refund check didn’t hit yet.
The beauty of Valentine’s Day to me is the simple fact that you have nobody to impress but your partner. Who cares about what that one person says about you getting your partner their favorite stuffed animal and some chocolate from Wal-Mart. As long as you and your partner are happy, that’s really what matters with the holiday.
