The 2024 Bayou Classic Step Show brought an electric atmosphere to New Orleans, with Southern University taking center stage. The Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. claimed first-place honors, cementing Southern University’s legacy of excellence.
For the brothers of Beta Sigma, the victory was a testament to hard work and synergy. “We really walked on the stage knowing we had the steps down to the beat,” shared Jayden Bradley, Junior Music Education major from Gramercy, Louisiana, and the Step Master for Beta Sigma. “When we performed, it felt almost effortless as we fed off each other’s energy, leaving the stage with everything we had. So when we had that check in our hands, it felt euphoric! Every stomp, clap, and hit paid off.”
Amber Lastie, the chapter’s Miss Black and Gold, echoed Jayden’s sentiments. “Winning wasn’t just about the routine itself—it was about weeks of preparation and long late-night practices,” said Lastie, a Junior Animal Science major from Opelousas, Louisiana. “This win is a reflection of what happens when passion meets purpose. Standing alongside the brothers after all their hard work paid off is truly inspiring.”
The Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. also delivered a breathtaking performance, reclaiming their place as champions. Lauren Sanders, a Senior Biology major from Monroe, Louisiana, expressed her pride in her sisters. “They had many late nights and early mornings working for this. And they made sure to restore the Alpha Tau legacy the right way. I love my sisters, and congratulations!”
The night showcased the resilience, dedication, and talent of Southern University’s Greek organizations. Both teams brought their absolute best to the stage, earning roaring applause and admiration from the audience. Other participating step teams from Southern Univeristy were the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and the Beta Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc
