The Southern University Senate held an open discussion for their sixth meeting of the fall semester, in which they tackled crucial topics regarding students affairs. On Tuesday November 12, members gathered to highlight a dynamic platform for addressing critical issues affecting bills, actions, registration for classes, and student lead organizations. This meeting reflected the university’s commitment to keeping a thriving academic and social environment.
Budget discussions were a focal point of the meeting, as the Senate reviewed allocations for the upcoming fiscal year. Emphasis was placed on the Judicial Branch’s budgets and budget policies. “The importance of this bill is for the future chief justice to know, that they can make future programming without a budget.” Kharis Taylor, (Senior, English Education).
Registration was the Senate’s next concern, though this doesn’t seem to be the same to some students. Many neglect and/or forget to register for their next semester classes. Early registration for athletes, band members, honors students, and underclassmen took place the week of November 1. With regular registration scheduled in Harris Hall until the end of the semester, senior political science major Rylon Rowe speaks on behalf of all advisors saying, “Get with your advisor at the one-stop shop for registration.” Rylon Rowe (Senior, Political Science).
Disciplinary action was another critical topic of discussion, reflecting the Senate’s admirable focus on upholding the university’s code of conduct. Recent incidents on campus prompted various debates on the effectiveness of current policies and the possible need for revisions. The meeting segued into the importance of fostering a safe and respectful learning environment. Senators proposed strategies to address recurring issues such as accountability, ethics, and conflict resolution.
“Take accountability, that is how you grow as a leader.” stressed senior ag-business major and SGA President, Kennedy Or. This effort underscored the Senate and campus organizations’ commitment to accountability and community well-being.
Southern University Senate meetings serve as a vital forum for addressing institutional priorities. By focusing on budgetary integrity, disciplinary action, and holistic student support, the Senate reaffirmed its role as a steward of progress and accountability, ensuring the university stays a beacon of higher education. Stay tuned for their last meeting of the semester on Tuesday November 19.
