From the opening tip-off, Southern University asserted its dominance, overwhelming the Royals with their offensive firepower and stifling defense. The Jags shot 48% from the field in the first half and increased that number to 65.2% in the second half, demonstrating their ability to finish strong. They also converted 75% of their free throws in the second half, further showcasing their growth as the game went on.
However, The Jags missed a number of layups and free throws and committed unnecessary fouls at times. These mistakes, while not critical in a game with such a wide margin, are things the team will need to clean up as they enter conference play. Sophomore center Brentay Noel echoed this sentiment, saying, “It all comes down to concentration. We’re still working on those small mistakes, but that’s going to fix itself. It’s still early in the season.”
The Jags showcased the balance and depth, potentially making them a formidable opponent as the season progresses. The team’s scoring came from all over the court.
Southern University’s offense was led by several players, including senior guard Derrick Tezeno, finishing with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. It was complemented by junior forward PJ Dobuol and freshman forward Jayce Depron scoring 16 each. Furthermore, Depron went 4 of 10 from the three-point line.
The team chemistry was present for Southern as the team tallied 30 assists. As Head Coach Kevin Johnson emphasized, it’s not just about the points but about how the team works together, stating, “Stay composed. Handle what you gotta handle. Don’t let the pressure get to you.”
Defensively, Southern University dominated the glass, pulling down a total of 49 rebounds. They were relentless, securing second-chance opportunities and limiting Ecclesia’s offensive chances. While they were able to force turnovers and block shots, it was their physicality and control of the boards that kept the Royals from gaining any traction.
Brentay Noel, who contributed 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to improve. “I’m not focused on the stats,” he said, “I just want to help the team win. I believe we’re going to have a winning season.”
Assistant Coach Rashaad Richardson, whose defensive schemes were evident throughout the game, highlighted the excitement of playing at home. “It’s always exciting playing at home,” he said. “There’s a lot of energy. But we’re also doubling down on those small mistakes. Our goal is always to win the SWAC championship, and we’re going to keep working toward that.”
With the win, Southern University improves to 1-3 overall, but more importantly, they are now 0-0 in SWAC play, where the real competition begins. As the Jags head into the heart of their season, they will need to continue fine-tuning their game, correcting those minor mistakes, and maintaining their intensity on both ends of the floor.
As for Noel, he’s confident in the team’s potential. “It’s all about staying composed, taking it one game at a time. I’m ready to do my part to help this team make a run for the championship.”
Nevertheless, The Southern University Jaguars made a statement in their first home game of the season, cruising to a 131-42 victory over the Ecclesia College Royals. The game, held at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, not only gave the Jags their first home win but also served as a valuable opportunity to fine-tune their game in preparation for the upcoming Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) season.
Southern University’s next game will be crucial as they prepare to take on conference opponents, but if their home opener is any indication, the Jags are ready to make some noise in the SWAC this season.
