Southern will be back on The Bluff to face off against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The Wildcats will come into this week’s matchup 2-7 (Overall) and 2-3 (Conference Play) following an upset win over Grambling State 24-21 following a 3rd quarter comeback for the Wildcats. In that game, the Bethune-Cookman Quarterback Cam Ransom threw for 199 yards and 2 touchdowns while throwing for 18 of 20, equivalating to 90 percent. Furthermore, this was led by an extensive rushing attack led by running back Dennis Palmer, who ran for 86 yards on 4.3 yards per carry last Saturday. Despite the win, the Wildcats still come into this matchup dead last in total defense for the year and 3rd to last in total offense.
The Southern Jaguars, on the other hand, come into the matchup off a crucial win over Alabama A&M 25-20 to keep their number 1 spot in the SWAC West standings, improving to 5-4 (4-1) on the year. Freshman Quarterback Czavian Teasett broke out last Saturday, throwing for 294 yards and 3 touchdowns on 24-37 attempts. He also helped out the Jaguars’ offensive attack on the ground, rushing for a solid 59 yards on 9 carries, adding on to the 89 yards Dillion Kobe gained on the ground that evening.
While Southern is in the bottom 3rd when it comes to total points per game on offense, the Jags also place top 3 in Total Defense in the SWAC and is the number 1 pass defense as well as having a top 4 passing offense on the year. Southern is looking to end the season strong, potentially bidding their berth in the SWAC Championship, sitting firmly at the number 1 spot over Alcorn State. Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman is still searching to rack up a couple of wins before the end of the season to boost up hope while sitting near the bottom of the SWAC.
Southern vs Bethune-Cookman will kick off at A.W. Mumford Stadium at 2:00 on November 9th.
