As the election season comes down to the wire, Southern University’s NAACP has made significant strides in encouraging civic engagement among students. The organization has been at the forefront of mobilizing student voters through their initiative, VoteComing, running from October 3 to 30. Tuesday marked the culminating event of the week, aptly named Prowl to the Polls.
On this crisp autumn afternoon, students buzzed with excitement as they gathered in front of the student center. The NAACP organized a party bus that would take two separate loads of students to City Hall, where early voting was in full swing for the much-anticipated matchup between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. This event not only provided a fun and festive atmosphere but also served as a crucial reminder of the power of student voices in the democratic process.
As the bus rolled to city hall, students chatted about the upcoming election, sharing their thoughts on the candidates and the issues at stake. The group’s palpable energy was evident of the NAACP’s efforts resonating with the student body. “I’ve never felt this motivated to vote before,” said Kaitlyn Williams, a sophomore studying Political Science. “The NAACP has really made it easy and fun to participate. I can’t wait to cast my vote and get my sticker!”
The atmosphere walking into city hall was electric, with many students experiencing the thrill of voting for the first time. “Being part of something this big is amazing.. We’re making history!” exclaimed India McIntrye, a junior majoring in Mass Communications. “I feel like my vote matters, and the NAACP is helping us realize that we can make a difference.”
The Prowl to the Polls event was not just about voting; it was also an opportunity for students to connect with one another and discuss the importance of civic engagement. The NAACP hosted a pre-voting rally featuring speakers who highlighted the significance of participating in elections, particularly for young people. Their message was clear: every vote counts, and students have the power to shape the future.
As the Prowl to the Polls event wrapped up, it was clear that the NAACP’s initiative was a resounding success. The combination of community spirit, engagement, and education has left a lasting impact on Southern University. With the election just around the corner, one thing is certain: Jags are ready to make their mark.
